Sodding FAQ

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about sodding:

What is sodding?

Sodding is the process of laying down and installing sod, which is a layer of grass and soil, on top of a prepared soil surface. Sodding is an effective way to create a new lawn or repair an existing one.

What are the benefits of sodding?

Sodding provides a quick and easy way to establish a new lawn, as it eliminates the need for seed germination and establishment. Sodding also provides an immediate visual impact, as the sod creates a lush, green lawn right away. Additionally, sodding can be beneficial in areas with high foot traffic, as the sod provides a stable, durable surface.

When is the best time to sod?

The best time to sod depends on your climate and location. In general, the best time to sod is in the spring or fall, when temperatures are mild and rainfall is abundant. In warmer climates, you may also be able to sod in the summer, as long as you can provide consistent watering.

How long does it take for sod to establish roots?

It typically takes sod about 4 to 6 weeks to establish roots, depending on factors such as soil moisture, temperature, and sunlight. During this time, it is important to water the sod consistently and to avoid heavy foot traffic on the sod.

How should I water my new sod?

During the first two weeks after installation, water the sod twice a day every day for 10 to 15 minutes, once in the morning before the sun comes up and once at night after the sun goes down (or just before the sun goes down when the temperature isn't as hot).

After the initial 2 weeks, for the following 2 to 3 weeks, water twice a day every other day for 10 to 15 minutes, once in the morning before the sun comes up and once at night after the sun goes down. This will allow the soil to dry out slightly between watering. After this 4-5 week period, water the sod as needed to maintain moist soil, but be careful not to overwater, as this can cause root damage and disease.

Can I mow my new sod right away?

No, you should wait until the sod has been growing for 2 to 3 weeks, or until it reaches a height of 3 inches, before mowing it. Then, mow the sod to a height of 2 to 2.5 inches, being careful not to remove more than one-third of the blade length at any time.

What are the long-term maintenance requirements for sodded lawns?

Sodded lawns require regular watering, fertilizing, mowing, weed control, and aeration to maintain their health and appearance. Additionally, it is important to avoid heavy foot traffic on the sod and to address any issues, such as disease or weed infestations, as soon as they arise.

What kind of sod does HB Landscaping install?

We install Kentucky Bluegrass as our official choice of sod. We use Kentucky Bluegrass because it is the most readily available sod in Ontario, and is also a perfect type of grass for Ontario’s cool season climate.
